Andi

Paw Patch Animal Clinic, (March 27, 2024):  We are devastated to announce the passing of our Business Manager, Andrea "Andi" Fahmy who passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, following an extensive illness. After a successful career in the technology sector and real estate, Andi realized her lifelong passion in December 2011: helping homeless pets in rescue. Andi founded the flagship Veterinary Team for Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia. She passionately directed a staff of over 60 volunteers and partnered with over 100 local veterinarians to care for the dogs at the largest foster-based rescue organization in the country. Under her direction, thousands of homeless pets received proper veterinary care and found their forever homes—a legacy that continues to thrive to this day. In 2018, Andi took that passion and helped Dr. Banner found Paw Patch Animal Clinic where she proudly served as our Business Manager until her passing. Andi’s legacy of compassion, charity, and devotion to making the world a better place will live on in those she touched. Andi is survived by her husband, Deaye; mother, Sheila Fahmy; and her beloved pets.

…Andi spent over a decade of her life coordinating the veterinary care for thousands of homeless pets, giving them a second chance at happiness, and giving their new families a missing piece. We know Andi is still at the Rainbow Bridge, having yet to make it past all the animals she saved to get to the other side.

Rest well, sweet friend.

Kitten Season is Upon Us!

By Kim Kay of Angels Among Us Pet Rescue

For the next few months, shelters and rescues will be drowning in kittens, pregnant & nursing moms, and tiny orphans. If you're in rescue - whether you focus on dogs or cats - you are probably the person in your neighborhood and/or workplace that EVERYONE comes to with found animals. If you don't have a ton of cat experience and ESPECIALLY if you do have dog experience, I want to share a few important things about cats that are different from dogs in regards to all these babies being born!

Orphan Kittens (Bottle Babies)

The vast majority of orphan kittens are actually "orphaned" by well-meaning people. They see babies alone somewhere and assume they have been abandoned. They likely haven't been. If their mom is feral (and if they're outside, she probably is), it is absolutely normal for her to leave the babies to find food for herself. She may also leave because you're there and she's terrified of you. If you stay there and watch for her, she won't come back until you leave.

If the babies are content and sleeping or if they're crying because you woke them up, they're fine. I've had people say "But they're newborns and it's been 2 days and I've never seen mama." Reality: If mama really hadn't been sneaking around you to feed them, newborns wouldn't survive two days. So mama is super scared but if you leave them be, she'll take care of them. Ideally, if you can keep an eye out from a window, you'll see her eventually. Or if not, leave them for a couple of hours and go back and check again that they still seem OK. You can do this at periodic intervals until you're sure they're being fed. But know that mama might move them at some point because of it. (Which also means they're fine.)

If kittens are lethargic (don't start squirming and/or crying when you touch them) or they are dehydrated (which you can determine by pinching the back of their necks and seeing if the skin falls back into place or is "sticky") then something may have happened to mama. But the majority of the time, they should be left with mama until at least 4 weeks if at all possible. (Then they can be collected, socialized, and placed into homes.)

Pregnant Mom Cats

If you foster pregnant dog moms, you may have seen the occasional labor and delivery complications. You may be used to having a team of help at delivery. Cats are GREAT at giving birth. Complications during cat labor and delivery are extremely rare. However, complications are MORE likely to be caused by stressing out mom. If you or several people are there for the birth, she may effectively "hold them in" until she feels it's safe. The best thing to do is leave her be and come back later and see how cute the babies are. She doesn't need human help. She's a pro.

Nursing Mom Cats

While when dogs have giant litters of 10 or more, there is sometimes talk of supplementing if mom can't feed all of the babies effectively. Again, this is rare in cats. If mom is healthy, producing milk, and babies are latching on, you can do more damage than good by supplementing. You risk them aspirating and overfeeding (which by the way, is also dangerous for kittens) because you can't calculate what they are getting from mom. Nor, if kittens seem healthy, active, and seem to be growing and mom is attentive, do you need to weigh them daily or do too much with them at all for the first couple of weeks.

First, again, stressing mom is counterproductive. And two, when we talk about weighing bottle babies of any species, it's imperative that you weigh at exactly the same time each day. If you weigh them one day right after they eat and you weigh them the next day before they eat, you are going to get different weights and worry needlessly. When a kitten is nursing, you have no idea about the exact intake at any given time so weights will vary. Obviously, if there is a major loss (which usually, you can see), this indicates a problem, but a little bit is generally more about when they last ate than anything else.

Kittens

Rescues NEED kitten fosters. [If you want some extra cuteness in your life, please visit Paw Patch’s Rescue Page and contact a local rescue for more info www.pawpatchclinic.com/rescue-corner.

UPDATED CLINIC INFO 3/29/2021

Just a reminder, our visits are 100% curbside only for the time being in order to continue to protect Dr. Banner, our staff, and our clients. During these continued trying times, it is our goal to provide the safest and best care for your pets that we can.

Upon your arrival at the clinic, please choose a numbered parking place, call our clinic at 678-535-7290 and select Option 1. If we do not answer, please leave a voice mail. Recently we have had an increase in repeated rapid calling from clients unsure if we know they are here. Rest assured, if you leave a message it is visible in numerous places around the clinic, and we promise we will be out to assist you as soon as possible.

Additionally, there are many times throughout the day that our parking lot is empty and everything appears calm outside while you are waiting. However, that is rarely the case inside of the building. We are a fast-paced, single doctor practice striving to provide a vast range of care to our patients. Your time is very valuable to us and we are working as hard as we can to keep our appointments running on time while providing that same high standard of care that you (and we) expect. During that time we are also managing surgeries, emergencies, and other sick appointments.

Lastly, please SLOW DOWN upon your arrival at the clinic. For the safety of our staff who are frequently in the parking lot picking up/returning pets to cars and owners, the safety of those pets and our clients, we ask that you drive slowly through the parking lot and watch for the staff and client pets as you park.

Our goal is to provide excellent care and to assist you as quickly and safely as possible. We appreciate your continued support and trust as we navigate these challenging times.

UPDATED CLINIC INFO 3/19/2020

Based on additional guidance provided by the CDC and the American Veterinary Medical Association Paw Patch is adopting the following safety protocols EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY in order to further the protection of our staff and you while we continue to care for your pets.  In most states veterinary clinics are considered essential businesses, which means even should a "shelter in place" order be issued we may be requested to stay open to assist because veterinary hospitals "provide important animal and public health surveillance, deliver essential medical care for ill animals, and ensure that only healthy animals enter the food supply.”

We are asking that only clients with appointments that have not been designated as drop-offs enter the building.

If you would prefer a curbside appointment we are more than happy to accommodate that as well. Please just let us know when they schedule their appointment.

If you are dropping off samples, please label them and leave them outside the front door.  If you are picking up medications or other supplies, please call us from the parking lot and we will be happy to bring them out to you and request that you pay over the phone.

We are a very small staff, and in order to keep ourselves (and you!) as healthy as possible, we have begun asking clients questions when scheduling appointments to assess risk factors as recommended by the CDC.  Those questions include:

1.  If you or an immediate family member is currently coughing, sneezing, congested or has a fever.
2.  If you or an immediate family member has been around someone exhibiting these symptoms or in the vicinity of someone diagnosed with Covid19

3. Have you or any immediate family member been in a hospital or doctor's office; or in a public location with more than 10 people in the last week?
4.  If you or an immediate family member has traveled out of the country in the last 60 days.

If you answer yes to any of these questions that does not mean we won't see your pet!  We will just be taking additional safety measures.  We will ask that you call us from the parking lot upon arrival and STAY IN YOUR CAR until a technician in personal protective equipment (mask and gloves) arrives to collect your pet.  Please DO NOT ENTER OUR BUILDING.  We will be happy to treat your pet while you wait in the comfort of your car and keep in contact with you via phone (don't forget your charger!)

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us, we are here to help and walk you through this process.  We are receiving updated information daily (sometimes multiple times a day) so please know that these guidelines may change in the near future.  Our Facebook page and website is the best source of up to date information.
